Homework: Cell Unit COME IN WITH QUESTIONS
- Stem Paper: read and come in with questions on it, identify any vocab terms you are unfamiliar with.
- Text Chapter reading- make sure to go over topics that we have discussed in class and also remember you are responsible for cell organelles which we did not cover in class.
- Class handouts ( 3 sets) which were previously assigned. Check to see if you already have these from last Friday before printing them out. Answers should be very thorough- on the level of a stand alone study guide in terms of depth of response.
- Study for midterm exam ( this coming Friday) - all topics since beginning of semester. Review previous unit objective statements
- Past portfolio assignments may be signed out to study.

Sweet Dough Recipe: bake at 375 F. This will make a full pan of sweet rolls and in that shape, it will take about 20 minutes to bake through
proof: 2.5 teaspoons of Active Dry Yeast ( Bread machine is ok but not as good- it produces more carbon dioxide so what will be the result? but definitely not instant yeast which will not produce the full fermentation conditions and will not taste as good)
2 teaspoons sucrose
0.25 cup of warm water (Goldilocks style- why?)
Liquids: 1.5 cups milk
0.5 of a stick of butter ( saturated fat- what is its structure- what is a recent understanding about saturated fats in the human diet?)
3.5 teaspoons of NaCl
0.5 cups of sucrose
2 eggs
-Dry ingredients: approximately 5-5.5 cups of flour ( enough flour so that it isn't really really sticky)
Instructions:
-warm milk, butter, salt and sucrose in a pan until the sugar dissolves and the solution is just at simmer ( it is just about to boil).
-Pull off heat and let cool until warm- room temp is fine, anything colder and what will happen to the lipids in this solution? If that happens just reheat to get them into oil form.
-In a separate small bowl, beat eggs until well mixed- like scrambled eggs. Pour about a quarter of the warm milk solution into the egg mixture and blend.
-Add this egg/ liquid blend to the pan with the remaining milk solution.
In a large bowl, add 2 cups of flour and add the proofed yeast. Blend slightly. Add the egg/milk liquid and mix for a minimum of 100 turns.
^^( If you have a mixer that will knead dough ( like a kitchen aid type mixer) follow these directions: you can add about 2 cups of flour to the mixer and then scrape the flour mix into the mixer and set on low with a bread hook and add the remaining flour until the dough doesn't stick to the sides.)^^
-Add about 4 cups of flour and mix this in gradually. Gradually add even more flour as needed to allow the break dough to be pulled out of the bowl.
-Proceed as you did in class.
-Kneading this larger batch will take about twice as long
-Butter a large bowl. cover the dough with butter and place in a warm and protected location- put a clean cloth over the top to keep things from falling into your dough.
-When twice in size, punch down to original volume and leave it alone for five minute. After five minute rest, flour a counter lightly, roll the dough out and knead the dough again- half as long. Freeze at this point if you are going to- butter what ever you are wrapping/ putting it in so it doesn't stick.
-Form what ever shape rolls you wish and place in a baking pan. Let this rise again to twice in volume and bake immediately.
-After it is done, it needs to be taken out of the pan immediately and put on a baking rack ( or a row of chopsticks which is what I use- I have a lot of chopsticks in my house) and let cool. If you don't do this last step, your rolls may come out soggy.
Soft crust- if you want a soft crust, when it is just out of the oven, lightly rub underside with some butter and let cool.
Makes very good base for cinnamon rolls
Bon appetite/ Chop Fine!

Homework 10/31: read the following attached file on membranes. Make notes from the reading and practice drawing out a small section of membrane that includes integral,peripheral ( surface) proteins and cholesterol. Pay attention to what the various proteins do.
( ie, channels, markers, receptors etc). Think through the polarity of the proteins and of the phospholipids.

- Homework: read and take notes on enzymes. Be thorough with your reading- reread the sections to get clarification. Discussion in class will build on this and you should be able to apply these concepts in class.
- Knowledge audits- added left 1. evaluate how well you know the statement 2. Review your notes and the references on that topic on the website 3. Reformulate that statement into a question 4. Answer that statement fully in a handwritten response that is authentic.
- Lab report- rubrics were handed out in class. You may send me an email about lab reports but know that I will only be answering emails during a two hour period of time on Sunday. This report must be sent to [email protected] by Tuesday 8:30am. Hard copy of this report will be expected after your report has been initially evaluated so don't bother printing it out yet.
- Overdue: milk lab report- get it to me asap.
Announcement: enzyme/ protein knowledge audits will not be due until the first day of class after the break. Study and get some sleep for midterms and be ready to work on your labs during class. You will be asked to show data and be able to discuss what is going on and show where you are keeping track of sources of error in your lab book.
Announcement: There will be a short midterm exam this coming Wed that is not cumulative and will be very short= associated with class discussions around graphing and enzymes.
Homework for week of 9/29
--1. Next Class: Milk coagulation graphs- mean, sd of obtained results and also of USRDA reference data ( this should be of grams of protein and fat for each type of milk used). Full Lab report will be due on next Monday.
--2. Before Next Class: Read over the link on standard deviation on the statistical analysis page and come in with questions. Look over the powerpoint and any of the other related links on that page.
--3. For next 4A class: come in with a basic design idea for factors that influence enzymes lab. You must have this approved by me before you can go any further on this.
--------when you receive tentative approval- research your enzyme, know the optimal conditions, be able to justify your method for measuring the outcome of your experiments. ( ie, be able to tell me why are you measuring what you are measuring), figure out what materials you need and what your time frame will be.
[3A class- #3 above is what you will need to be able to do before the end of next class. Help yourself- don't sit with people who you are likely to chat unproductively with- chatting and getting work done don't readily mix during this phase of biology. Also, plan on last lunch for the next three class periods.]
--4. Get as much sleep as you can- class time is going to be busy and you need to be able to think.
--5. Read the hand outs on enzymes- the very last pages are about creating an enzyme lab so don't wait until the day before the test to actually look at the chapter.

This lowers the good cholesterol of HDL and increase the bad cholesterol of LDL in the blood stream. No amount of this fat is considered acceptable based on FDA recommendations and various medical research studies. TEST next Thursday on everything covered so far. I will hold a Monday tutorial for those students who have questions prepared and have note cards made. Drop off your questions during the day on Monday.
Milk Lab- write up due next classToday you extracted proteins out of the three types of milk: cow, almond and soy. You are to write out your materials ( bullet this) and your procedure ( list these numerically) and then create a data table that shows the results. You should also have a section underneath the data table where your observations are to be documented - these were to have been written down during the experiment and will include any and all non- quantifiable observations. Below that or after that, you should show your graphs- see below. After the graphs, write up a comparison between all three of the samples. Compare your obtained results to the protein content of each form of milk present. The actual food information will be found in the Topic: Nutrition Section in this website later this evening or your can look it up yourself but document where you got the numbers from). Create a bar graph comparing each milk for protein content and create a second graph comparing each obtained result to the commercial standard amount found in the nutrition section. Scale your graphs so that they take up at least half a page each and are on separate pages directly after the data tables,
Analyze your results and discuss any sources of error or variability that were present in your procedure. Comment on the reliability of your data and suggest ways to make it more reliable. Explain how casein ( or any globular protein) maintains its shape and suggest an reason for why acetic acid had such a change to how each of the liquids appeared. List and annotate all of the command terms used in this assignment at the bottom of your write up. |
Homework 9/14Finish: Knowledge Audit How To's ( this is found in the main general documents page) for Topic 3.1 and 3.2 ( and 7 to be added later Friday evening) Follow the instructions and pay attention to the command terms. Command term definitions are on the same general documents page. Use your notes and the condensed click notes at the bottom of Topic: Chemistry of Life and Topic: Protein and Nucleic Acids to answer the objective statements as if they were a question.
Answer the handouts given out during last class using the click notes or if you were not present in class to pick up your questions ( or get them returned to you) please answer the questions below.

Labor Day Homework: delayed until this upcoming weekend. Don't forget to review notes/create note cards. New cards should include creation of triglycerides; id/naming of various glycerides; hydrolysis and condensation reactions; ester bond identification and drawing saturated and unsaturated triglycerides.

Continuous assignments-Please note that there will be the continual need to update and review note cards, review notes and go back over review reference sites. This is a standing assignment and will not be directly given to you on a daily or weekly basis. This course is cumulative and as such will require you to review material continually through out this year and maintain that knowledge into the next year. Get into the habit of using your planner, schedule out time to review and be consistent with your studying. Cramming is actively discouraged so please plan your time wisely; sleeping well and exercise/relaxation are encouraged.

Sl Blog will contain posts of interest, extra credit and various science related and class discussion related continued topics/posts. Topics/Options will have subheadings for the various topics that will contain reference notes, reference review sites, helpful animations or links and videos related to the IB objectives for that topic. TOK is additional TOK related posts of various kinds. Extended Essay is directly related to Biology EEs but there is general EE information as well as links and articles for other subjects ( updated as time allows). Group 4 page is related to the IB Chem/ IB Bio joint group project that will occur during the senior year. ( Don't worry about that yet!). This website is not complete and topics are continually being updated so check back through to see if anything has been added to a topic from time to time.
